APP: Assessing Pupils’ Progress:

 Application, Possibilities and Practicalities

This day is most effective for training purposes. This course is suitable for all classroom teachers. It will also be of relevance to school leaders, especially the Assessment Coordinator, Curriculum Manager, Key Stage leaders, and leaders of core subjects.

Course overview

  • An overview of App, the rationale, the benefits
  • Using Assessment Focuses (AFs)
  • APP and lesson planning
  • Links between APP, the Primary Framework and the National Curriculum
  • Assessment guidelines for APP
  • Making judgements
  • Securing APP judgements

APP is a structured approach to assessment, using diagnostic information about pupils’ strengths and weaknesses. It is an approach which supports the quality and reliability of teacher assessment.

APP has been introduced to schools in order to support a secure, rigorous and focused assessment process. It will in time supplement or replace formal summative SATs, and will be of increasing importance in all schools.

This course goes beyond the pure mechanics of using APP, often dealt with at Local Authority level, and deals with a more personalised application of the system for each school.

What’s in it for me?

  • Greater understanding of the use of assessment to structure teaching and learning
  • Support in asking questions about the progress that children are making
  • Practical suggestions on using assessment information to inform planning at all levels

As a result of this course, teachers will be able to make more “intelligent” use of assessment, leading to more accurate judgements, more focused planning and better progress for children

Ofsted inspectors increasingly make judgements about the effectiveness of a school’s use of assessment, which has become a significant focus in the current inspection schedule.
