The new Ofsted document “Using Data, Improving Schools” stresses the importance of using assessment to help structure teaching and learning, where assessment supports teachers in asking questions about the progress that children are making, and informs future planning at all levels.

This course will support head teachers, senior leaders and classroom teachers in making “intelligent” use of assessment, leading to more accurate judgements, more focused planning, and better progress for children.

This in depth exploration of the use of assessment will cover:

  • Different types of assessment
  • Evaluating achievement – for individuals and groups
  • Assessment in Foundation Subjects
  • Using criteria – the quality and reliability of teacher assessment, including moderation
  • Using assessment to plan learning paths and targets for pupils
  • Assessment through transition
  • Collecting and recording assessments – a structured approach
  • Using assessment for diagnostic purposes
  • Analysing the results of assessment

Attendance at this course will help leaders and teachers in creating an assessment and recording system which will support them in ensuring the best possible progress for all children; it will also prepare schools for the more rigorous emphasis on assessment featuring in the current inspection process.

This Course is available to L.E.A. Families, Clusters of Schools and for INSET days
