A closer look at the Standards for Teachers

This course is suitable for Head Teachers, Members of Leadership Teams, School Clusters, Local Authority Conferences, Classroom Teachers

This course is also suitable for Inservice as a consultancy day for heads and school leaders.

The 2012 Standards for Teachers take a completely fresh look at what teachers should be able to do, to know and to understand as part of their everyday life in school. The Standards go much further than what happens within lessons, and raise high the expectations of the professional levels which all teachers need to reach.

This course explores right to the heart of the new Standards for Teachers, including the proposed Master Teacher Standard, and considers different ways as to how the requirements may be met. It covers reciprocal links to Performance Management and the use of generic, personal and professional targets for improvement. It also makes clear links to the Ofsted Teaching Criteria.

By the end of the day, delegates will have a greater insight into what teachers will need to know, understand and be able to do to meet the requirements of the standards, and what the school can do to help them to provide the evidence they need to meet each separate standard.

The course explores self evaluation and awareness systems for teachers, using the Standards as baseline criteria, and supplementing other criteria such as Ofsted. It explores how individuals and teams might begin to use the standards to reflect and consider for themselves how effective they really are in their various roles – and what they can do to move forward.

The new Standards for Teachers will be used as a benchmark for competency and accountability, and ways are considered in which all staff can move towards excellence, using a motivational approach towards growing self awareness, and exploring limiting factors on the individual, the team, and the school itself.

Throughout the day the following themes will be covered:

Using the new Standards for Teachers:

  • An exploration of the standards and what they might look like within the classroom
  • The implications of the standards and Performance Management
  • The standards and Ofsted
  • The role of Teacher Self Evaluation: To what extent are teachers meeting the standards?
  • Evidencing standards and the burden of proof
  • Taking the theory into practice in the classroom
  • Career progression and the standards: The Master Teacher Standard
  • Supporting teachers to excellence

Course Fees: £195+VAT per delegate - subsequent delegates from the same school or cluster group (3 or more schools) will be discounted to £175+VAT.
