Meeting Standards, Raising Standards

This course is suitable for School Clusters, Local Authority Conferences, Leadership Teams. It can also be adapted for use as In Service for teachers, with a slightly greater emphasis on team work and accountability.

All courses can also be provided as consultancy days for heads and school leaders.

This training is aimed at all teaching staff – from the Newly Qualified Teacher, through all core teachers, to those who aspire to Excellent Teacher and AST standards. It is suitable for those wishing to develop their skills at all levels, and also for leaders of teaching and learning in Primary Schools.
The course explores the Professional Standards for Teachers, and compares expectations at the different levels of experience. It covers reciprocal links to Performance Management and the use of generic, personal and professional targets for improvement.

By the end of the day, delegates will have a greater insight into what teachers will need to know, understand and be able to do to meet the requirements of each level of the standards, and what the school can do to help them to move through the competencies.

The course explores self evaluation and awareness systems for teachers, using the Standards as baseline criteria, and supplementing other criteria such as Ofsted. It explores how individuals and teams might begin to use the standards to reflect and consider for themselves how effective they really are in their various roles – and what they can do to move forward.

The new National Standards for Teachers are used as a benchmark for competency and accountability, and ways are considered in which all staff can move towards excellence, using a motivational approach towards growing self awareness, and exploring limiting factors on the individual, the team, and the school itself.

Throughout the day, teachers will be able to explore and discuss the following themes:

  • Using the new Professional Standards for Teachers:
  • How do I know that my classroom provision is good? How can it become better?
  • How can I progress in my career – even if I don’t want to pass through the threshold? Why should this be important to me?
  • How can the school support me? What part can I play in school improvement?
